Kenya on track to produce marine turtle conservation strategy

Kenya stakeholder workshop participantsA National Sea Turtle Stakeholders Workshop, held in Mombasa from 7 – 9 April, brought together diverse stakeholders, including representatives of implementing agencies, research institutions, local-level conservation groups, NGOs, industry, and other interested actors. The discussions will culminate later this year in a comprehensive ‘Sea Turtle Conservation and Management Strategy’ for the country.  More »


Proceedings of coastal fisheries bycatch mitigation workshop available

Cover of workshop proceedingsAs reported in the IOSEA Profile of the Month for March 2009, a highly informative Technical Workshop on Mitigating Sea Turtle Bycatch in Coastal Passive Net Fisheries was held in Honolulu, Hawaii, from 20-22 January 2009. 

The proceedings of the workshop are now available for downloading from the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council. More »


Marine turtles on stage at the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission

Bali port scene - photo c/o Michel GoujonA number of important developments emerged from the 13th meeting of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission, which concluded five days of deliberations in Bali, Indonesia (30 March - 3 April).

A draft resolution proposed to address the problem of marine turtle bycatch was particularly relevant to IOSEA, and a number of other aspects of the meeting were also of interest. Most of IOTC’s coastal State contracting Parties are also signatories to IOSEA. More »

 
FROM THE SECRETARIAT


The staff of the Secretariat will be away on leave for part of the month of May. Neverthless, work on a number of consultancy projects mentioned in last month's e-News is progressing well
, and the first outputs should reach the Secretariat for review in the coming weeks.
