Sea Turtles - Our Ocean Ambassadors

The IOSEA MoU Secretariat has teamed up with Scubazoo, a film production company based in Malaysia, to produce a short DVD to promote awareness of marine turtle conservation issues in the Indian Ocean - South-East Asia region. Financial support to bring the project to fruition was generously provided by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs - United Kingdom.

This informative DVD, being distributed in January 2008 to the broad IOSEA constituency, consists of two segments:


Educational version (run time approx 4:20 minutes)

This version explains how sea turtles are valued around the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia, describes some of the threats they face, and outlines practical measures that can be taken to help conserve them. It is intended to inform audiences who require detailed information about the nature of the problems facing turtles, as well as things that they might do to be part of the solution.

Possible uses include classroom presentations, briefings of public officials, awareness-raising for hotel guests, display at information kiosks etc.

Public Service Announcement version (run time: 1 minute)

An abbreviated one-minute video touches on these same themes, but in a more concise package that is well suited for use as a Public Service Announcement (PSA) on television.

The Secretariat is currently exploring ways of distributing and broadcasting the PSA version of the DVD more widely, through established networks in Asia. We would very much appreciate hearing from you if you have ideas of how the DVD might be used in your own country; and we would especially like to receive reports of actual broadcast arrangements.

Cost constraints prevented us from sub-titling the DVD in languages other than English, but if there were interest in producing local language versions and if sponsorship could be found, this could be considered.
