The Secretariat is pleased to announce that the Sixth Meeting of the Signatory States will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 6 to 9 December 2011.
The meeting is made possible by a grant from the Marine Turtle Conservation Fund administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and a pledge from the French Ministry of Ecology (MEDDTL). Non-Signatory States and organisations concerned with the conservation and management of marine turtles and their habitats are also welcome to attend as observers. The Meeting of Signatory States will be preceded, on 4-5 December 2011, by a meeting of the IOSEA Advisory Committee.
In addition to reviewing progress towards implementation of the IOSEA MoU, the Signatory State meeting will consider a proposal for establishing a network of sites of importance for marine turtles, review recommendations arising from current and past species assessments, and discuss arrangements for training and capacity-building.
The meeting agenda also provides for sub-regional meetings and thematic workshops. Depending on the amount of time available, up to 3 or 4 half-day workshops are envisaged, possibly running in parallel. The format may include expert presentations, case studies/problems introduced by participants, problem-solving exercises, provision of resource materials and suggestions for follow-up. A workshop on 'Climate change impacts and mitigation strategies for marine turtles' is among those planned. Other titles have been suggested. The Secretariat welcomes feedback on the proposed themes and suggestions of other topics.
The provisional agenda may be revised prior to the meeting to include proposals for inclusion of additional agenda items. A separate table describes the expected outcomes of selected agenda points. An annotated provisional agenda and meeting schedule will be circulated and posted on the IOSEA website in due course.
