The proceedings of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) Marine Turtle Conservation Workshop are now available. The workshop, which took place from 16-17 September 2004 in Mombasa, Kenya, aimed to strengthen collaboration in research, conservation and management of sea turtles in the WIO region.
Participants identified a variety of mechanisms to reinforce existing national and regional frameworks. This led to agreement on a proposal to establish a WIO-IOSEA Marine Turtle MoU Task Force under the Nairobi Convention.
The proposal for interim recognition of the Task Force is due to be presented at the next meeting of Nairobi Convention Focal Points in November 2005, with a view to having it formally tabled and adopted at the next meeting of the Conference of the Parties.
In addition to providing background on this initiative, the proceedings include presentations on the history of, and various perspectives on, the status and conservation of marine turtles in the WIO region.
A draft WIO regional concept proposal was also reviewed at the workshop, and the proceedings outline recommendations suggested by attendees to improve regional co-operation, build research and management capacity, and enhance community participation.
The workshop was jointly supported by WIOMSA, IUCN, WWF, CMS, and WCS and hosted and organised by KWS and KESCOM.
