Australia: Turtle safeguards 10 Jul 2009

BOATIES may have noticed more signs marking ``go slow’’ zones in Moreton Bay over the past few months.  The Parks and Wildlife Service have marked out 5680 more hectares for ``go slow’’ zones in Moreton Bay, a 30 percent increase.

Last week Sustainability Minister Kate Jones went up close and personal with some Bay turtles to push the point.

From July 1 water police began handing out $400 fines to boaties caught speeding, or ``planing’’ through the new zones. It is part of the State Government’s bid to protect turtles in Moreton Bay.

Ms Jones said before the zones were first introduced over a decade ago, around 80 percent of loggerhead turtles in the Bay were being hit by boats. The number of injured turtles has since dropped to 50 percent, and the State Government hopes the number will drop further with the new ``go slow’’ zones.

Follow the links at http://www.epa.qld.gov.au for the location of the zones, or pick up a Parks and Wildlife Service User Guide from bait stores or the Parks and Wildlife office at 34 Trafalgar St, Manly.
