Port Blair, India — On 6th February 2010, two patrolling teams viz. one from Betapur Range and another from AFEVS, Rangat were sent to Cuthbert Bert and Forester Valley Forest areas to check both Forest & Wildlife Offences. The team from Betapur Range while performing patrolling in the Cuthbert Bay Reserve Forest area intercepted a gang of three people carrying cut meat of Olive Ridley Turtle with intact flippers on their shoulders in four Sangha (ballies) weighing around 50 Kgs.
The offenders on sighting the Forest officials started running and after chasing, one of the offenders Shri Gour Roy, S/o. Late Aadhar Chandra Roy, R/o. Korangnallah was caught red-handed along with the meat. The other two offenders ran away taking advantage of the terrain and thick forest. 10 Nos. fore flippers and 10 Nos. hind flippers of the turtle along with 2 Nos. blood stained Dah and a plastic bag were seized from his possession, which meant that the offenders have killed five turtles.
The cut meat was been identified as the meat of Olive Ridley Turtle by the Assistant Surgeon (Vet.), Webi, Mayabunder, Dr. Poonam with reference to its flippers and skin colour. After following all Codal formalities a Wildlife case has been booked in the Hon’ble Court of JMFC, Mayabunder on 07.02.2010 and the accused was remanded to judicial custody.
Efforts are being made to nab the other two absconding offenders by name Shri Gopal Roy, S/o. Late Aadhar Chandra Roy, R/o.Korangnallah and Shri Niranjan Roy, S/o. Late Aadhar Chandra Roy, R/o Cuth Bert Bay. The accused has accepted that the other two absconding offenders are his brothers. The seized meat was disposed by burying deep in the soil after getting burial order from the Hon’ble Court.
Every year, Olive Ridley turtle comes to Sea shore to lay eggs since this is its nesting season and comes under part-II of Schedule–I. The offence committed is a Non-bailable offence. The team was led by Shri V.Krishna, Forester and assisted by Shri Cilas Guria, Forester, Shri N. Subramani, Shri M.K. Ali, Forest Guards and other workers, The entire operation was carried out under the close supervision of Shri V.V. Dinesh Kumar, Range Forest Officer, Betapur Range.
Similarly, the team of AFEV Squad, Rangat, which was sent to Forester Valley forest area also succeeded in rescuing a barking deer from the possession of S/Shri Ramnath, S/o. Nowa Ram and Shri Robert Tete, S/o. Late Mathias Tete, both R/o Forester Valley, Kadamtala. The deer sustained lot of injuries in its body and unfortunately it later succumbed to its injuries despite efforts to nurse it back to health. Both the persons involved in the offence were immediately arrested and a wildlife case under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 was booked against them.
The team was led by Ms. Neelam Purthy, Forest Ranger (OJT) and was assisted by Shri Vincent Barla, Head Forest Guard, K.K.Baidya, Khalid-II, Forest Guards and other workers. The entire operation was carried out under the close supervision of Shri A.K. Das, Range Forest Officer, AFEVS.
