Australia: Joggers get running for loggers 25 Oct 2010

By Vanessa Marsh

Turtle lovers tied their laces and hit the track to raise awareness and show support for our flippered friends yesterday.

About 50 walkers and runners welcomed in the turtle season at Mon Repos with a choice of walking or jogging 8km or 2.5km for the second Joggers for Loggers event.

Mon Repos Conservation Park ranger in charge Cathy Gatley said she was impressed with the number of people who went along to kick off the turtle season.

“It was a great morning and we had beautiful weather,” she said.

As well as the 50 runners and walkers, about 100 people headed to the Bargara Turtle Playground, where the celebrations continued.

“There was a sandcastle building competition and we had some displays set up,” Mrs Gatley said.

“It’s a nice way to involve the community in the start of the turtle season.”

While the first turtle of the season has already been sighted, tours will not begin until November 6.

“She (the first turtle) has been in three times but she still hasn’t laid,” Mrs Gatley said.

The turtle ranger of 15 years said the flatback turtle was just taking her time.

“It’s nice to see them come in year after year,” she said.

“Particularly the very experienced turtles like the 60-year olds – the old girls, as we call them.”

Cut the Glow junior turtle rangers from St Luke’s, Kalkie and Moore Park primary schools also attended the event and were presented with certificates.
