The "Save A Turtle" initiative is spreading like a forest fire and this time EZONE has focussed attention in spreading the Turtle Walk among school children.
Enthusiastic bunch
Hafiz Khan from EZONE visited the Al Qamar Academy School to spread the word about the endangered turtles. He spoke about how the turtles arrive at the Chennai coast and lay eggs, how the eggs hatch 45 days later and how the hatchlings make their way back to the sea. He also emphasised that many hatchlings do not survive the journey to the sea due to natural reasons, human activities and animal interference.
The young Al Qamar kids promised to do their part by spreading awareness, participating in beach clean ups and writing articles. They were excited and thrilled when each child was given an opportunity to touch and feel the three baby Australian green back turtles that Hafiz brought.
NIne-year-old Aisha described how a turtle's head usually is wet and their shell, which had a small crack, was mostly smooth and the bottom part was hard.
She spoke about a movie on turtles that lower classes in her school were shown and went on to say that they had made placards of the "Save A Turtle" logo to promote awareness. It looked like Aisha was desperate to be a part of the beach cleanup that will shortly be organised by her school.
Youth support
Arun from The Students Sea Turtle Conservation Network (SSCN), who is an active member of the Turtle Walk, says school children are interested in the whole campaign and take great interest in spreading awareness among people.
Arun has led the Turtle Walk many a time with children from schools in and around Chennai including Vruksha school, Vidya Mandir, Krishnamoorthy Foundation schools and DAV group of schools. But this time a school from Coimbatore, Isha Homes school had come all the way to Chennai to participate in his Turtle Walk awareness programme.
With colleges like Loyola College, Madras Christian College, Stella Maris, DG Vaishnava joining the Turtle Walk, it is safe to say that the youth are taking this initiative seriously.
