A huge Green Sea Turtle from Malaysia that was trapped in a fisherman’s net in Pulupandan, Negros Occidental, was set free yesterday.
Fisherman Clarence “Islaw” Garganera of Brgy. Zone 6, in the town, reported to the police that while he was pulling his fishnet or ”salap” toward the shorelines at about 5 a.m. yesterday, a heavy object prevented him from controlling it until he saw a large turtle trapped inside.
Garganera brought the turtle to the shore and reported the matter to authorities, a press release from the Office of Mayor Magdaleno Peña said.
A DENR representative examined the turtle that weighed 200 kilograms with a length of 105 centimeters and 96 centimeters in width, it said.
Two wingtags were found on the turtle indicating that it came from 768 Sandakan, Sabah Malaysia. A new Philippine wingtag was clipped on it before it sent off to the sea, the press release added.
