Mayor Celso Lobregat has released a Green Sea Turtle which he named as “Lawin” weighing 55 kilos yesterday morning at Paseo del Mar.
The name of turtle comes from Typhoon Lawin. “We have released the turtle which we called Lawin because over the last few days we have heavy rains that caused flooding,” the mayor said.
At the height of heavy rain, according to Lobregat, they were informed that a turtle washed to shore and this turtle was rescued at R.T. Lim Boulevard, “the rain was induced by Lawin so we decided to call the Turtle Lawin.”
Last Sunday, September 23, certain individuals rescued the turtle and they immediately brought to Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) for further examination.
Authorities said the age of the male turtle is about 20 to 30 years old measuring 83 meters in length and 75 meters in width.
A DENR Official, Michael Dela Cruz, said that during examination they did not find any injuries on the turtle. He suspected that the turtle might be mating and was carried by the strong waves and rain to the shore.
The official added that the retrieval of turtles in this city is a proof that there are many turtles in the peninsula. The city’s coastlines are nesting sites of turtle especially the Sta. Cruz Island.
The green sea turtle is considered one of the endangered species and the people are prohibited to catch this kind of turtle.
