Phuket’s JW Marriott and Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation donate funds to help Phuket’s endangered sea turtles
Recently, JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, on behalf of the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation, donated THB 50,000 to the Turtle Hatchery Program (under the Royal Thai Navy) and THB 25,000 to the Injured Turtle Rehabilitation Program (under the Phuket Marine Biological Center).
JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa’s General Manager Tony Pedroni – who is chairman of the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation – and Marketing Communications Manager Kewalin Sukumjittanon visited the Phuket Marine Biological Center and The 3rd Naval Area Command at Phuket’s Panwa Cape to make the donation. The funds will be used to support the Injured Sea Turtle Rescue Project in 2013 and renovation of the Sea Turtle Nursery House.
JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa is situated on the beautiful Mai Khao Beach, which is a nesting area of the endangered leatherback turtle. The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation was founded by the resort in 2002 to raise funds and awareness of the protected sea turtles and the preservation of the Mai Khao area. Facing multiple threats, the sea turtles’ numbers have severely depleted in recent years. Commercial fishing kills thousands of them every year, while many more die from eating or becoming trapped in plastic debris littering the ocean.
The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation’s efforts have included a beach and reef clean up, fundraising mini marathon and an educational project for Mai Khao students. March 2012 saw the 3rd Mai Khao Turtle Release event take place on Mai Khao Beach, in which 70 green turtles were released back into the Andaman Sea.
The 3rd Mai Khao Turtle Release marked the 10th anniversary of the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation. The THB 75,000 donated by the foundation included funds raised at this event, along with donations by guests at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, Marriott’s Phuket Beach Club, Marriott’s Mai Khao Beach, Anantara Phuket Villas and Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa.
The ceremonies held for the presentation of the funds to the Turtle Hatchery Program and Injured Turtle Rehabilitation Program also saw the release of five rehabilitated Green and Hawksbill turtles back into nature.
