Kenya: Rare Hawksbill turtle dies in Watamu 13 Feb 2013

By Raabia Hawa

The Local Ocean Trust has reported the death of a large old Hawksbill turtle. The turtle was brought to the Trust through 'Bycatch programme. The female turtle, estimated to be over 50 years old, had a spear-gun injury in her neck.

A veterinarian arrived immediately to treat the turtle but she died early on Tuesday morning. The Bycatch programme, initiated by the Watamu Turtle Watch, compensates fishermen who surrender turtles they catch in their nets.
