Australia: Urgent call for turtle nest mesh 11 Jan 2014

Coolum Coast Care is desperate to source a new supply of the plastic mesh it uses to protect marine turtle nests along the Sunshine Coast.

The barrier mesh is the only product the group can find that has holes big enough for the hatchlings to pass through when they are emerging from the nest, and which are also strong enough to prevent attacks by key predators.

The company which previously produced the mesh has been sold and the line dropped by the new owners.

Spokesperson Sherida Holford said Coolum Coast Care's supply of the mesh that perishes rapidly in the elements was very low.

"If you know any building supply company that still has this mesh in stock, could you please call the below numbers and we can purchase some,'' Sherida said.

"Alternatively, if anyone has some of this mesh that they do not require, please contact Leigh on 0407397018 or Sherida on 0403370157 and we will arrange to collect the mesh from you."

The start of the 2014 season has amazed carers with 13 loggerhead and two green turtle nests recorded from the Maroochy River up to Sunshine Beach.

One turtle has even swum into the Maroochy River to lay its eggs on the bank.

"We are so thankful to all those beach walkers with a keen eye who are calling us to report tracks,'' Sherida said.

"With two more months of nesting to go keep up the great work.''
