Australia: Avoid Island not avoided by flatback turtles 23 Jan 2014

An island off the coast between Mackay and Rockhampton may hold the answers to many questions about the vulnerable flatback turtle.

Avoid Island is a very significant flatback turtle rookery and has been used for the last couple of years as a site for studying the turtles.

As the island is far enough away from the major ports of Gladstone and Mackay it will be useful to compare what's happening there with those closer to more developed areas.

Dr Nanci Fitzsimmons is the Adjunct Associate Professor in Biology at Griffith University who has been studying the turtles of Avoid Island for the last couple of years and will be back checking for hatchlings very soon.
