Sri Lanka: Three nabbed for slaughtering sea turtles 25 Jan 2014

Three suspects who allegedly engaged in slaughtering sea turtles for meat were taken into custody yesterday (January 24) in Kalpitiya.

Police media unit said officers acting on information provided by the Kalpitiya naval base arrested the three suspects at the Rosapaduwa island, along with three live sea turtles and 11 kilograms of sea turtle meat.

The suspects are residents of Rosapaduwa and Kalpitiya. They were produced before the Puttalam Magistrate's Court and released after being imposed a fine of Rs.120, 000. Kalpitiya police are investigating.
