Malaysia: Pulau Upeh to be turned into turtle sanctuary 8 Nov 2006
An island off the coast of Malacca has been bought by the Fisheries Department to be turned into a proper turtle sanctuary.

The department paid RM7 million to Tenaga Nasional Bhd for Pulau Upeh which, though only 2.8ha, is the largest landing area for hawksbill turtle in Malacca.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam said the island, along with the beaches along Kem Terendak, Padang Kemunting, Tanjung Dahan and Tanjung Serai had long been the favourite place for the threatened species.
