Indian activities in support of the Year of the Turtle 2006 campaign were inaugurated on 1 December 2006 by the Chief Conservator of Forests and Trust Director, Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve Trust Dr. V.K. Melkani, I.F.S.
The campaign is being carried out in nine coastal villages of Tuticorin district along Gulf of Mannar through placards, issue of notices, dance, drama, songs and personal meetings. Forty-seven school ecoclub students from Holy Cross Ahglo Indian Girls Higher Secondary School, St. Joseph's Girls Higher Secondary School and Subbaiah Vidyalayam Girls Higher Secondary School are involved in the activity. Karachi: WWF-Pakistan organised two back-to-back beach cleaning activities on November 8th and 14th, at the Sandspit Beach along Karachi coast, in which more than 800 school children from different towns of the city enthusiastically took part.
The activities formed part of the ‘IOSEA Year of the Turtle-2006’ celebrations. WWF has been endeavouring to save the marine turtles that come to nest on the Sandspit beach, which is a globally significant marine turtle nesting site. The Centre for Coastal Environmental Conservation (CCEC), a local level environmental NGO based at Khulna, Bangladesh, has launched an Olive Ridley endangered turtle species conservation campaign (November 2006 to January 2007) at several coastal fishing islands of the Bay of Bengal.
The campaign activities include: group discussion, opinion sharing meetings, questionnaires administered on turtle conservation, interviews of the fishermen and Bahaddar (fishing boat, net, fishermen owner), distribution of conservation leaflets, brochures, posters and T-shirts among the participants - consisting of staff and Forest Department officer, the Coast Guard, and RAB members. The National Agriculture Department and Government of Guangdong province launched a campaign to publicize sea turtle conservation in China's National Gangkou Sea Turtle Reserve (NGSTR) on 23 October 2006.
The activity was carried out in conjunction with the Year of the Turtle 2006, and was aimed at highlighting the threats faced by sea turtles and encouraging greater public awareness and support for the marine creatures.

The Year of the Turtle was commemorated with different kinds of sport and educational activities in two coastal places of Eritrea, Massawa and Assab, from 28-29 October 2006. Turtle posters and brochures in three languages (Tigrigna, Arabic and English) and banners were displayed and distributed in several areas of the cities. The aim was to increase understanding of and create awareness about sea turtle conservation to the coastal and island communities and relevant governmental and non-governmental organizations. Currently, nesting occurs in more than 120 offshore islands and coastal areas of Eritrea. More » |
